II. SEKLER CUP
Sapientia U23 joined the European University Hockey League (EUHL) in the 2019-2020 season. The first season was for team especially successful because the players had a lot of valuable international experience, and we were also able to organize a tournament in Karcfalva under the auspices of the EUHL. This year, the league couldn’t start, but the Sekler Cup will still take place over the weekend.
As last year, the Székelyföldi Jégkorong Akadémia sought to enable the student team to compete in an international field that is physically and technically closer to our players, in addition to the Hungarian adult championship.
This plan was somewhat crossed out and modified by the epidemic situation. The Romanian championship was achieved with a fragmented program, but with good play and remarkable results. However, the European University Hockey League could not start. As this is an international competition series with teams from 3-4 different countries in a group, travel restrictions and different regulations have made it impossible to run.
Last season, we experienced it as a huge recognition and a sports diplomacy success that we were able to organize a tournament on the home field within the framework of the EUHL immediately after our accession. The February 2020 EUHL Sekler Cup was a unique experience for players, both professionally and emotionally.
Knowing the positive results of last year’s tournament, we tried to bring the event under the roof again this year, also aware that no match has been played in the European University Hockey League this year. Our effort proved to be successful, as between April 30 and May 2, the Felcsík Ice Rink will host the II. EUHL SEKLER CUP.
Once again, the field arriving in Karcfalva will be colorful, as both Slovak and Czech hockey players will step on the ice. In addition to Sapientia U23, the tournament will feature HC Uniza Zilina, UK Praha, already known from last year and EUHL Select. The team is build from UTB Zlín, Gladiators and Székelyföldi Jégkorong Akadémia.
The tournament kicks off on Friday afternoon, but the related series of events will start earlier, with an online press conference starting at 11 a.m. on Thursday, which can be followed live on the Sapientia U23 Facebook page. The event will be attended by Jaroslav Straka, President of the European University Hockey Association, which operates EUHL, Attila Nagy, Executive Director of the Szeklerland Hockey Academy, and Tamás Horvát, President of Sapientia U23.
A II. Although the EUHL Sekler Cup matches will take place in front of empty stands, we will broadcast all the clashes live on the Youtube channel of the Székelyföldi Jégkorong Akadémia.
