EUHL 2014/2015: Prague Continued Its Dominance as a New Force Emerged in Banská Bystrica

The inaugural 2013/2014 EUHL season was a bold experiment. The second edition, however, showed that this ambitious project was gradually developing into an established and respected competition.

Following UK Praha’s historic 6–4 victory over Paneuropa Kings Bratislava, attention turned to one question: Could the Czech university team repeat its success?

The answer was clear: yes, it could.

UK Praha claimed its second Sekeráš Trophy and began building the first great dynasty in EUHL history. The Prague team eventually dominated the league’s first four seasons.

Prague Was No Longer a Surprise

While UK Praha entered the history books as the league’s first champion in the inaugural season, the Prague team began its second campaign as the clear favourite.

Its opponents faced a team that already knew what it took to win and understood exactly what was required to reach the title. However, defending the trophy would become one of the greatest challenges of the season.

Retaining a championship is often more difficult than winning it for the first time. Nevertheless, UK Praha handled the pressure and once again confirmed its quality.

Petr Hučko – The Face of the Second Season

If there was one player who perfectly symbolised the second EUHL season, it was Petr Hučko.

The UK Praha captain was not only the leader of the championship-winning team but also the league’s top scorer and Best Player of the Season.

He recorded 27 points during the regular season, and his outstanding performances also earned him a place in the EUHL All-Star Team.

Hučko became one of the league’s first major stars to combine team success with individual dominance.

Newcomers from Banská Bystrica Shocked the League

One of the most remarkable stories of the season was the arrival of UMB Hockey Team Banská Bystrica.

In their very first EUHL campaign, the newcomers advanced all the way to the final — an exceptional achievement.

Banská Bystrica had only just joined the league, yet the team was already capable of competing with the defending champions.

Young coach Lukáš Opáth played an important role in the team’s success and received the Coach of the Year award.

UMB – The Beginning of a Great Story

Looking back, the 2014/2015 season holds special significance.

Although Banská Bystrica did not win the championship, the club laid the foundations for a team that would later become one of the most successful in EUHL history.

Lukáš Opáth, Milan Kyseľ and the other people involved with the team began building a project that would eventually deliver the long-awaited Sekeráš Trophy.

The All-Star Team Highlighted the Strength of Several Universities

Players from several different teams earned places in the season’s All-Star selection:

• Petr Hučko – UK Praha
• Matúš Porubský – HK Slávia STU Bratislava
• Karel Herr – UK Praha
• Nicolas Ketner – HK Slávia STU Bratislava
• Marek Marušiak – Paneuropa Kings
• Daniel Bednárik – Gladiators Trenčín

The All-Star line-up demonstrated that the second season was no longer simply a battle between Prague and one Slovak opponent. Playing quality was beginning to spread across several university hockey centres.

Vokatý – A Player for the Biggest Games

Another standout figure of the season was Vojtěch Vokatý, Petr Hučko’s teammate at UK Praha.

Following the conclusion of the knockout stage, Vokatý was named Play-off MVP. The championship-winning team therefore had two particularly influential players in its ranks:

• Petr Hučko – offensive leader
• Vojtěch Vokatý – Play-off MVP

It was this combination of individual quality, team strength and outstanding performances in decisive games that led UK Praha to another championship title.

Paneuropa Kings Were No Longer Slovakia’s Only Leading Team

Following the historic final of the inaugural season, Slovak university hockey began to develop more rapidly.

Paneuropa Kings remained an important name, but other ambitious university projects gradually began to emerge. Among the teams moving to the forefront were:

• Gladiators Trenčín
• UMB Hockey Team Banská Bystrica
• HK Slávia STU Bratislava

The EUHL was beginning to create a genuine university hockey map of Central Europe.

Interesting Fact: The Newcomers’ Coach Received a Prestigious Award

One of the most notable achievements of the season was that the award for the league’s best coach went to the coach of a newly established EUHL team.

Lukáš Opáth later became one of the most prominent figures in university hockey. His name remains closely associated with the successful era of UMB Banská Bystrica in EUHL history.

UK Praha claimed its second trophy. Looking back, however, the successful title defence was not the season’s only defining moment.

The arrival of UMB Hockey Team Banská Bystrica was equally significant.

Although the team had yet to win a championship title, it demonstrated in its debut season that it had the ambition and quality to compete among the league’s best.

History would later confirm that those ambitions were only the beginning.
