EUHL 2015/2016: Prague Made History as Petr Hučko Became the League’s First Major Star

The third EUHL season brought a third consecutive title for UK Prague. Petr Hučko once again topped the scoring charts, while the Prague-based team continued to build a dynasty that remained unrivalled during the league’s early years.

The third season definitively confirmed that the EUHL was not a short-term project. The competition continued to grow, attracting more players, universities and new hockey stories.

However, one team remained at the top – UK Prague.

After winning the championship in 2014 and 2015, the Prague side entered the 2015/2016 season with one clear goal: to secure a third consecutive title.

That was exactly what they achieved. According to the official EUHL archive, the students of UK Prague lifted the Sekeráš Trophy once again at the end of the league’s third season.

Prague Began to Build a Dynasty

The first two titles could have been viewed as the beginning of a successful era. The third, however, represented something more – dominance.

UK Prague became the team every opponent had to overcome if they wanted to challenge for the championship. The Prague side possessed experience, a high-quality roster and, above all, a winning mentality.

One of the main symbols of this successful era was Petr Hučko.

Petr Hučko – Unmatched Productivity

During this period, Hučko became one of the league’s most prominent personalities.

According to the official EUHL archive, Petr Hučko once again finished the third season as the league’s leading scorer. His name repeatedly appeared at the top of the individual statistics.

At a time when the competition’s first individual records were only beginning to take shape, this was a remarkable achievement.

Hučko was not merely a player on the championship-winning team. He became one of the EUHL’s first true stars.

UK Prague – A Team That Knew How to Win

There was nothing accidental about Prague’s success. The team combined experience, individual quality and excellent organisation.

Its roster featured players who would later regularly appear in the league’s All-Star selections. One of them was Karel Herr.

Herr later established himself as one of the league’s best defencemen and became one of UK Prague’s most prominent long-term players.

Banská Bystrica Waited for Its Opportunity

UMB Hockey Team entered the season with a completely different motivation.

Following their appearance in the previous season’s final, they were no longer newcomers. They had become serious title contenders.

The project led by Lukáš Opáth was gradually establishing itself. The growing competition between Prague and the Slovak teams also began to add a new sporting dimension to the EUHL.

New Teams, a New League Map

The 2015/2016 season was also a period of further expansion. The EUHL was moving towards a model that brought together university teams from several countries.

The league archive features teams such as UK Prague, UMB Banská Bystrica, Gladiators Trenčín, Paneuropa Kings Bratislava, STU Bratislava and Technika Prague.

Other university hockey projects gradually joined the competition. The EUHL was beginning to evolve from a Czech-Slovak project into a broader Central European platform.

The EUHL Began Looking towards Poland

One of the season’s important off-ice moments was a meeting in Katowice between the EUHA leadership and representatives of Polish ice hockey.

The official archive records that the meeting took place in May 2016.

At the time, nobody could have known that ten years later, Polish team UHT Sabers Oświęcim would become the holder of the Sekeráš Trophy.

However, the foundations of Poland’s future involvement in the EUHL were already being laid during this period.

Prague Won, but the Competition Was Growing

UK Prague’s third title was a major achievement. At the same time, it was becoming increasingly clear that the league was changing.

Banská Bystrica was growing stronger, Trenčín was improving and new university hockey projects were emerging. Teams from other countries were also beginning to show interest in joining the EUHL.

Prague remained at the top, but the foundations for future change had already been laid.

Hučko, Herr and the First Generation of Stars

The players who symbolised this era included Petr Hučko, Karel Herr, Vojtěch Vokatý, Marek Marušiak and Adam Haščič.

The final name is particularly significant. In the following season, Adam Haščič would establish himself as one of the competition’s biggest stars.

The Third Title Was No Coincidence

UK Prague won three consecutive trophies, creating the first true dynasty in EUHL history.

At the same time, the third title foreshadowed the changes that were approaching. Prague’s rivals were closing the gap, new teams were improving and players capable of rewriting the league’s individual records were beginning to emerge.

One of them was a young Gladiators Trenčín forward – Adam Haščič.

His breakthrough season was only one year away.
